In a reimagining of L. Frank Baum's classic, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," a young girl must protect her older sister as they wander across a post apocalyptic desert searching for a new home with only a shotgun and five shells for defense.

"5 Shells" is a micro-budget feature that I shot in the beautiful wilds of New Mexico this summer.  After our own global financial psuedo-apocalypse it is a tough sell bleeding a stone for cash for an independent film.  I say, like the heros of "5 Shells," go it alone.  Movies were made to be made.  So do I'm doing it.

SYNOPSIS

When their parents are brutally murdered by bandits, two young girls, Matti and Joslyn, are left completely alone in a world destroyed by a financial meltdown.  Their sibling rivalry results in a constant jockeying for power, and despite the fact that she is younger Matti emerges as the one calling the shots. With the weight of responsibility on her shoulders and a shotgun in hand, Matti decides they must find a new home.

Walking across a vast wasteland, far from the ruins of a society crumbled under the hubris of unchecked financial ringmasters, Matti becomes withdrawn, unable to deal with the tragedy of her loss.  Yearning for some normalcy, Joslyn begs her sister to read to her from her favorite book, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.”  Where Joslyn needs the comfort found in the pages once read to her by her father, the imagery conjured up by the story begins to infect Matti’s dreams.

Complicating matters are two nomads they come upon.  Stanton is closer to the girls' ages, and takes an immediate liking to Joslyn, however she is more drawn to his companion, Frank.  A lobbyist before the fall, Frank can flash a great smile, but underneath his charm Matti senses a core of menace.  While their alliance has a bloody end, Frank and Stanton teach Matti a valuable lesson:  the meek probably will not inherit anything.
